Top Lunchbox Reviews and
School Lunch Box Ratings

Top Lunch Box ReviewsPlastic food containers reports and buyer’s guides, including Rubbermaid, Tupperware, Bento Boxes, and Laptop Lunches. We’ve come a long way since the classic metal lunch box. Our lunchboxes reviews and comparisons will help you select the best lunch box system for you and your family. We’ve researched all the top lunch box products, lunchbox companies and food storage containers and evaluated their pros and cons. Our lunch boxes ratings are based on several factors which lead to the best value for your money. These rankings include quality, ease of use, adaptability, appearance, lunchbox convenience and price. Each parameter is graded between 1 and 5 and then these are averaged together to create the overall rating. Certain categories carry more weight. For example, if it is a great product but not actually convenient as a lunchbox system, then that brings the rating down. If you hear of a great product that you want us to check out, please let us know about it.

        —Howard Richman (and Staff)

Japanese Bento BoxMany of the lunch box systems that now compete for your attention are inspired by the classic Japanese Bento Box. An authentic bento box is usually made of high-quality wood that is lacquered to a shiny finish and provides an elegant way to serve a meal. The feature of the bento boxes that is so practical is that it has several compartments which keep various foods separated from one another. A true bento box, of course is not portable at all as there is no cover! But using different materials, it is exciting to see how different companies present variations of the bento box theme.

Single-Lid, 3-Compartment Containers
from EasyLunchboxes.com

 OUR TOP CHOICE! LunchBoxRating-5

EasyLunchboxes.comThis is our new favorite! Easylunchboxes.com is the current winner in our lunchbox system review. This company offers the perfect lunch-making solution with their ultra easy-to -use containers and carrying bags. The containers are durable and made of high-quality materials. The clever design of one lid and one bottom with three food compartments makes clean up a breeze! The carrying bags are also very high quality and come in fun fashion colors. They’re roomy enough to include other lunch essentials like an ice block, water bottle, thermos, additional snacks, or even a second container! This is an adaptable and well-designed product that will actually save you lots of time. The product is priced so reasonably that you can buy a set of four cheaper than a single lunchbox from many competing companies!

Stainless Steel Containers and Lids
from Lunchbots.com

LunchBoxRating-4

LunchBotsWonderful high-quality stainless steel construction. Eco-friendly and reusable. Basically Bento Box components. You would need to buy a few of these for each lunchbox. They are not inexpensive though. In fact the set is quite pricey, which adds up if you have more than one child. No carrying bag offered to fit the whole set.

Mix n'Click
from WOW Containers.

 LunchBoxRating-3

Wow Storage ContainersThe interchangeable Mix & Match Storage System. This is really a very good system and a great value. The cool thing about this set is that lids and bottoms are interchangeable. But it seems better for home storage rather than for use with on-the go meals.

Nesting Plastic Containers
from Fit & Fresh

LunchBoxRating-3

Fit & FreshThis is pretty much a dressed up set of different size plastic containers that all fit into one box with an ice block. The large container holds a sandwich or entree, as well as the thin ice block and the two smaller “side cars” (as they are called), which hold 2 side dishes. Different ways of stacking or using the components make this a flexible choice for your lunch box, but so are different shaped plastic containers and an independent ice block. Not sure why you would need to spend a little more for this. Pretty and relatively affordable, but not a time saver or a more efficient way of packing lunch.

Kids Classic Lunch Set
from Tupperware

LunchBoxRating-3

TupperwareYou know that Tupperware is excellent quality so that is the best thing about this system. The Pak-N-Carry Lunch Box includes two 4-oz. Snack Cups and 1¾-cup Small Container. We like the modular aspect of this so that you can accommodate a drink, sandwich, snacks, dessert, etc. And we LOVE the fact that all the elements are leakproof. But because there are so many pieces, it seems pretty inconvenient to organize and to wash, especially if you have more than one child! And also, the price may be considered prohibitive by many.

The Ultimate Food Storage Solution
from Always Fresh Containers

LunchBoxRating-3

Always Fresh ContainersRemoves gas and toxins to Keep all edibles frsh longer. Eliminates freezer burn, No harmful chemicals. Environmentally fiendly anti-microbial with nanotechnology. These containers really do work and they are great at keeping food fresh over a longer-than-average period of time -- at home! However, if you want to use them as a lunchbox, you would need some type of carrying bag to tote them around. So, for that reason, even though this is a very cool product, it is not necessarily ideal as a lunchbox.

Personalized Lunch Boxes
from Frecklebox.com

LunchBoxRating-4

FreckleboxThese are adorable! This is just the lunch box that carries the food/food containers, not the food containers. Personalize any of these adorable designs with a name of your choice. We don’t think these are big enough for your average eater, so these small lunch boxes are best suited for small children with small appetites. Well-priced for a personalized item.

TakeAlongs
from Rubbermaid

LunchBoxRating-4

RubbermaidRubbermaid is a reputable plastic storage container company and they have an excellent line of food storage products. Their TakeAlongs come in all sorts of sizes. They don't really offer a "lunchbox system" but you could improvise one by getting some of their containers and then getting a separate carry bag. The down side is that you have a lot of separate components to clean each day.

Minimize Landfill Waste
with Go Green Lunch Box

LunchBoxRating-3

Go Green LunchboxGreat idea but not very flexible. Your food needs to fit in this box as there is no additional room inside the offered carrying bag for any other food additions. The 5 compartments hold a generous amount of food, but to make it leakproof, you have to be careful to close it properly. If your young child doesn’t finish all their runny food, they may not seal it correctly for the trip back home and then you would have a mess to deal with. Small removable parts can get lost or damaged. Carrying bags are a bit pricey.

Prevent Squished Sandwiches
with lunchsense

LunchBoxRating-3

LunchSenseThis is a very attractive and well-made lunch box system. However, it is so full of moveable parts you may spend more time putting the containers and carrying bag together than actually preparing the food. Even though they have a very professional and convincing website, this product will not make your lunchmaking routine easier. This is an overly fussy system with many different parts that need to be kept track of. We don’t see a real need for your lunch carrying bag to be opened flat and reassembled every day (to use as a placemat or for cleaning) so the moveable parts & snap closures, while impressive, add extra cost. Too complicated for small children and really an unnecessary feature for any lunch box.

Customizable High-Quality Plastic Lunchboxes
from Goodbyn

LunchBoxRating-3

GoodbynAdorable, well made, and very eco-friendly. But this all in one lunch container/carrying bag is short on practicality! There is no way to keep all the food/compartments cool. You could freeze the drink bottle that is included, but it will only keep the lunch semi-cool, as it doesn’t touch all the compartments. The snap lock feature that has to be done very carefully and correctly to keep messier/wet items from leaking into the other compartments is not easy for a child to master. The fun stickers that are included is a very cute feature, but the bulky size and high cost of the Goodbyn doesn’t make up for what it lacks in ease of use.

Insulated Lunch box and Four Containters
from lunchopolis

 LunchBoxRating-4

LunchopolisVery eco-friendly, well-made and attractive. You’re paying for all the “green” value here. A set of different sized containers, drink bottle and nice carrying bag. No more, no less. Lots of separate container parts to wash and keep track of. But there is room to add an ice block in the carrying bag, so that’s a plus.

Americanized Bento Box
from Laptop Lunches

LunchBoxRating-2

Laptop LunchesThis Americanized Bento Box system is quite pricey for the poor to average quality, and not particularly efficient when it comes to functionality. The lunch container is designed to hold food horizontally, but the lunch bag then holds the inserted container vertically, so food gets shifted around quite a bit and the flavors combine. All the little insert pieces can tend to get lost (especially by small children) and since they offer replacement pieces on their website, this obviously happens often. The drink bottle is of very poor quality/leaks, and the container lid(s) don’t always fit properly. Since many people include a sandwich in their lunch, it’s unfortunate that the sandwich must be cut into extra small shapes to fit into the “sandwich” compartment. The sizes offered do not hold much food or whole pieces of fruit. OK for small children, but not great for adults, even small eaters. We feel that the high price of this product is not warranted.

Reusable Plastic Baggie Substitutes
from
Love My Planet Lunches

 LunchBoxRating-3

Love My Planet LunchesBeautifully-made, extremely green-friendly lunch packing bags. Different size “Saks” hold a variety of different foods and then you put all of them in the equally well made “green” tote. This is a great idea for people who don’t mind spending a lot of time at night cleaning the individual Saks and having them all over the counter drying till morning. They are machine-washable, but their FAQ’s say “To save water and energy, we recommend that unless your Sak is sticky from a messy peanut butter sandwich, you flip it inside out, wipe the inside down and dry over a coffee cup overnight. It will be ready to fill again by breakfast.” We think the sight of all these upside down bags on the kitchen counter (not to mention space wasted), multiplied by however many kids may be in a family, is enough to keep you from purchasing this product, even if you are trying to save the earth.

Reusable Sandwich Bag Alternative
from
ReUsies

LunchBoxRating-3

ReUsiesThese are reusable food bags. No lunch tote offered. For the same reasons cited about the food bags offered by Love My Planet Lunches (above), we don’t recommend these very cute bags as a practical way to pack lunch every day. A lunch system that does not use hard containers means that, for the average active child who drops his lunch or has it thrown in a pile with classmates’ backpacks etc., the food will invariably be squished and unappetizing by lunchtime. Not recommended for much more than a pretty and reusable way to tote a few crackers in the car or diaper bag to give to baby. However, if combined with a hard lunchbox container, you could probably work out a system that would help save the environment!

Washable Sandwich Bags
from Fresh Snack Pack

 LunchBoxRating-3

Fresh Snack PackSame concept as the other reusable food bags offered by the two companies directly above, but these bags are made of a very food-safe type of plastic called EVA. Kudos to this company for using high quality materials, but again, for the same reasons cited above, we don’t recommend these very cute bags as a practical way to pack lunch every day. Furthermore, the FAQ’s on this site state “I know it's hard, but try to wash them as soon as you get home and hang to dry. Food sitting in the bags and left in your lunchbox can stain. Below is a list of some foods that can stain the bags.” We think most parents have bigger priorities than immediately washing and drying food bags after school.

Bag Substitute/Sanitary Placemat
from Wrap-N-Mat

 LunchBoxRating-3

WrapNMatThe coolest thing about this product is that each pouch opens completely flat to create a clean eating surface. It provides a wonderful alternative to the disposable baggie. This is a reusable food sack/wrap for sandwiches, chips or other dry snacks, but this one is made of a thick, food safe plastic. The designs are cute and the quality is nice, but this product is best suited for toting and serving small snacks or just a sandwich, than for actually packing an entire lunch. No carrying bags offered.

Reusable, waste-free lunch kit
from KidsKonserve

LunchBoxRating-4

KidsKonserveBeautfully-made lunch system that combines hard and soft containers in an attractive recycled cotton tote. The high price shows in the excellent quality and design of the different components. Stainless steel containers nest when not in use. This is an expensive set. There are a lot of pieces to clean and dry every day, but the high prices would deter the user from buying extra components to keep on hand for use if some are dirty.

Stainless Steel Food Carriers
from To-Go Ware

LunchBoxRating-4

To-Go WareMade from hygienic, non-leaching food-grade stainless steel, the food carrier is an alternative to plastic and this company offers a very well designed, excellent quality product. We don’t think this system is child friendly because of parts that need to fit and lock together. It seems more of an upscale adult design. The lunch containers are bulkier and take up more room in a dishwasher than other food containers. You aren’t going to get the portioning options that other lunch systems offer, but the generous size of the 2 tier or 3 tier container system does offer some flexibility. Cute bamboo utensils and their essential cotton carrying bag make this a very attractive lunch set. It’s sleek and cool. Pricey, but if looks are important, this one may be for you.

Lunch Transportation for the Green Generation
from PlanetBox

 LunchBoxRating-4

PlanetBoxWe love this box and carrier. So many great features and very well-made. High-quality stainless steel. Kids can have fun decorating it with different magnet designs. A couple of leakproof containers included for sauces or wet food make this a flexible system. The carrying bag holds all the components, a drink bottle, and there is room for a reusable ice pack. A bit cumbersome to wash or put in the dishwasher. The only thing we don’t like about this product is the price. A complete lunch set is almost $60 and that’s before shipping! Yikes - hope you don’t have a lot of lunch eaters in your family! These would be a serious investment.
