About Your Instructors

Your workshop leaders each have many years of teaching, performing and improvisation experience. Ellen, Howard and Florence have also worked together extensively in their multidisciplinary improvisational group, “Musement.”

Ellen Burr's multifaceted musical career has won her praise in performance, improvisation and composition. She has improvised with many new music luminaries, written dance and theater scores, produced many interdisciplinary concerts, including her one act opera, in addition to appearing on over sixteen CD's. Ellen has, given classes to universities, as well as being a private teacher for over 35 years and a Yamaha Performing Artist. Ms. Burr had her solo debut with the Topeka Civic Symphony at age sixteen holds a MFA in music composition from CalArts, a BM in flute performance from Wichita State University and a Certificat de Stage from her studies with Jean Pierre Rampal in France.

Howard Richman is a pianist, composer, teacher and educator. Since 1976, he has improvised with other pianists, instrumentalists, singers, poets, painters and dancers. He has composed more than 3000 individual “Sound Portrait,” improvisational piano interpretations. Howard specializes in creating improvised music for specific illnesses and conditions. His company, Sound Feelings Publishing publishes several of his titles, including Stress, Cancer and Dementia. Howard Richman received his B.A. degree in piano performance from UCLA and an M.F.A. (Master Fine Arts) degree from California Institute of the Arts, where he also taught on the faculty for three years.

Florence Mercurio Riggs has been a vocal technique teacher, sound healing improvisational performer, and sound healing teacher for many years. She has a B.A. in music and a Masters Degree in Opera and Voice. Her performance experience encompasses classical and opera, musical theatre, pop, and jazz as well as acting experience on stage and T.V. She had co-founded 5 improvisation groups: Song Waves I, Song Waves II, Voce Arcana, Musement, and currently Gaia Mama. Florence creates a safe haven for the student to learn and expand, not only in using their voice, but as a total human energy system and spirit being.
